November 2026: Top Doctors
Unless you live in one of New Jersey’s myriad towns called Washington or another place named for a significant figure in American history, you have probably wondered about (and possibly researched) the origin of your town’s name. For example, Morristown, where New Jersey Monthly is based, is named for the Colonial-era governor Lewis Morris.
But did you know that Cape May is named for the Dutch sea captain Cornelis Mey, who sailed along the Shore in the early 1600s? Or that New Providence was named for a supposed miracle that occurred there in 1759, when it was called Turkey Town?
There’s a story behind the name of every municipality in the Garden State, and we play the name game and give you the backstory on dozens of them, offering up a slice of history and fun.
Speaking of names, there are 1,061 of them in this issue that make up our annual list of the Top Doctors in New Jersey.
We are proud of the methodology behind the list, because every single doctor on it was nominated by their fellow doctors. There’s no other way to make it onto the list.
Earlier this year, a questionnaire was sent to all physicians who have been licensed in New Jersey for five or more years. We asked them to vote for doctors whom they’d want to treat their own families. To be on the list, doctors must either have received enough votes from their peers to qualify or have been nominated by our professional advisory board.
Use this list as a starting point to find a doctor. Remember: Always do your own research before making decisions about your health.
